Acquirer Error Codes

Overview

 

All response codes between 0 and 99 are either from the Acquiring or Issuing Bank. This article will give you an overview of the difference codes that can be returned on a transaction, along with a description of the error.

 

Response Codes and Messages

2Refer to issuer, specialThe Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the card number. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
3Invalid merchant or service providerThis error indicates that either the Merchant facility is non-functional or the details entered into the Gateway are invalid.
4Pick up cardThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested that the card be retained as the card may have been reported as lost or stolen. 
5Do not honourThe ’05 – Do Not Honour’ error is a generic bank response code that has several possible causes. This response can be caused by a myriad of things, including velocity checks at the bank, lack of funds, incorrect data in the request, etc. This is the vaguest reason that can be provided to Cardstream by the Card Issuing Banks and we are actually unable to elaborate any further on this.
6ErrorThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as there is a problem with the card number. The Cardholder should contact their card issuer and/or use an alternate payment method.
7Pickup card, special condition (other than lost/stolen card)The Cardholders card issuer has declined the transaction and requested that the card be retained as the card may have been reported as lost or stolen. 
8Honour with identificationTransaction processed successfully – identification NOT required. This code is returned by some banks in place of 00 response.
9Request in progressThe Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the card number. The Cardholder should contact their bank and/or use an alternate payment method.
10Approved for partial amountThe transaction was successful for a partial amount. 
11Approved VIPApproved VIP
12Invalid transactionThe bank has declined the transaction because of an invalid format or field. This indicates the card details were incorrect. Check card data entered and try again.
13Invalid amountThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction because of an invalid format or field; or amount exceeds maximum for card program.
14Invalid card numberThe Cardholders issuing bank has declined the transaction as the payment card number is incorrectly entered, or does not exist. 
15No issuerThe Cardholders issuer does not exist. Check the card information and try processing the transaction again.
16Approved, update track 3An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
17Customer cancellationThe Cardholders card issuer has prevented this transaction from taking place due to cancellation. 
18Customer disputeThe Cardholders card issuer has prevented this transaction from taking place due to an ongoing or previous dispute. 
19Re-enter last transactionThe transaction has not been processed and the Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again. No further information is provided from the bank as to the reason why this was not processed.
20Invalid response/acquirer errorThe bank has declined the transaction because of an invalid format or field. This indicates the card details were incorrect. Check card data entered and try again.
21No action takenThe Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the payment card number. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
22Suspected malfunctionThe Cardholders issuer could not be contacted during the transaction. The Cardholder should check the card information and try processing the transaction again.
23Unacceptable transactionAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
24File update impossibleAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
25Unable to locate record on fileThe Cardholders card issuer does not recognise the credit card details. The Cardholder should check the card information and try processing the transaction again.
26Duplicate reference numberThe Cardholders card issuer does not recognise the credit card details. The Cardholder should check the card information and try processing the transaction again.
27Error in reference numberThe Cardholders card issuer does not recognise the credit card details. The Cardholder should check the card information and try processing the transaction again.
28File is temporarily unavailable for updateAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
29File action failed/contact acquirerAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
30Format errorThe Cardholders issuer does not recognise the transaction details being entered. This is due to a format error. The Cardholder should check the transaction information and try processing the transaction again.
31Bank not supported by switchThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as it does not allow transactions originating through mail/telephone, fax, email or Internet orders. 
32Complete partiallyThe transaction was successful for a partial amount. 
33Expired card, captureThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as card has expired or the date is incorrect. Check the expiry date in the transaction and try processing the transaction again.
34Suspected fraud, retain cardThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as there is a suspected fraud on this credit card number.
35Card acceptor, contact acquirer, retain cardThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested that the Cardholders card be retained as the card was reported as lost or stolen.
36Restricted card, retain cardThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested that the Cardholders card be retained.
37Contact acquirer security department, retain cardThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested that the Cardholders card be retained.
38Pin tries exceeded, captureThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the Cardholder has entered the incorrect PIN three times.
39No credit accountThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the credit card number used is not a credit account.
40Function not supportedThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as it does not allow this type of transaction.
41Lost cardThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the card has been reported lost. 
42No universal accountThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the account type selected is not valid for this card number. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
43Stolen cardThe Cardholders card has been reported as stolen.
44No investment accountThe Cardholders card issuer has declined the transaction as the account type selected is not valid for this payment card number.
45Account closedThe Cardholder card issuer has advised the payment account is closed. 
46Identification requiredThe Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the credentials used in the transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
47Identification cross-check requiredAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
48No from accountAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
49No to accountAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
50No accountAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
51Insufficient fundsThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the payment card does not have sufficient funds.
52No cheque accountThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the payment card number is associated to a cheque account that does not exist.
53No savings accountThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the credit card number is associated to a savings account that does not exist.
54Expired cardThe Cardholders card is expired.
55Incorrect pinThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the customer has entered an incorrect PIN.
56No card recordThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the credit card number does not exist. The Cardholder should re-enter their card details, or use an alternate payment method. 
57Function not permitted to cardholderThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as this payment card cannot be used for this type of transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
58Function not permitted to terminalThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as this payment card cannot be used for this type of transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
59Suspected fraudThe Cardholders issuer has declined this transaction as the credit card appears to be fraudulent. 
60Contact acquirerThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction. The Cardholder should contact their bank and retry the transaction.
61Exceeds withdrawal limitThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as it will exceed the Cardholders card limit. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or speak with their bank.
62Restricted cardThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the payment card has some restrictions. The customer should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
63Security violationThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method and contact their bank.
64Original amount incorrectThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction due to the amount attempting to be processed. The Cardholder should check the transaction amount and try again, contacting the issuer should the problem persist.
65Exceeds withdrawalThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the Cardholder has exceeded the withdrawal frequency limit.
66Contact acquirerThe Cardholder should use an alternative payment method. 
67Capture cardThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the card is suspected to be a counterfeit. The Cardholders issuer has requested that the Cardholders card is retained. 
68Time outThe Cardholders issuer is temporarily not able to process this Cardholders card. The Cardholders should attempt to process this transaction again.
69Advice received too lateThe Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the credentials used in the transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
70Contact card issuerThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested the Cardholder to contact the bank.
71Message flow errorAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
72Authorization center not available for 60 secondsThe Cardholders issuer is temporarily not able to process this Cardholders card. The Cardholders should attempt to process this transaction again.
73Authorization center not available for 300 secondsThe Cardholders issuer is temporarily not able to process this Cardholders card. The Cardholders should attempt to process this transaction again.
74Pin entry necessaryThe Cardholders issuer has indicated there is a problem with the credentials used in the transaction. The Cardholder should use an alternate payment method, or contact their bank.
75Pin tries exceededThe Cardholders card issuer has declined the transaction as the Cardholder has entered the incorrect PIN more than three times.
76Unable to locate previous message (no match on retrieval reference number)An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
77Previous message located for a repeat or reversal, but repeat or reversal data are inconsistent with original messageThe Cardholders issuer is unable to be contacted to authorise the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again. If the problem persists, there may be an issue with the card issuing bank.
78Blocked, first used. The transaction is from a new cardholder, and the card has not been properly unblockedThe Cardholders issuer is unable to be contacted to authorise the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again. If the problem persists, there may be an issue with the card issuing bank.
79Already reversedThe Cardholders issuer is unable to be contacted to authorise the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again. If the problem persists, there may be an issue with the card issuing bank.
80Visa transactions: credit issuer unavailable. Private label and check acceptance: invalid date’An unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
81Pin cryptographic error found (error found by vic security module during pin decryption)’The Cardholders issuer is unable to be contacted to authorise the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again. If the problem persists, there may be an issue with the card issuing bank.
82Cvv validation errorThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as the CVV is incorrect. The Cardholders should check the CVV details and try again. If not successful, the Cardholder should use an alternate payment method.
83Negative cam, dcvv, icvv, or cvv resultsThe Cardholders issuer was not able to process the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again.
84Pre-auth time too greatAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
85Issuer able to process the transactionThe issuer was able to process the transaction and had no reason to decline it.  It is used instead of an approval code of 0 when no funds transfer is being approved.
86Unable to verify pinAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
87Purchase amount only, no cash back allowedThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction because amount exceeds maximum for card program.
88Unable to authoriseAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
89Ineligible to receiveAn unspecified bank error has occurred. The Cardholder should attempt to process the transaction again.
90Cutoff in progressThe Cardholders issuer is temporarily not able to process this Cardholders card. The Cardholders should attempt to process this transaction again.
91Card issuer unavailableThe Cardholders issuer is unable to be contacted to authorise the transaction. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again. If the problem persists, there may be an issue with the card issuing bank.
92Unable to route transactionThe Cardholders issuer cannot be found for routing. The Cardholder should attempt to process this transaction again.
93Cannot complete, violation of the lawThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction and requested the Cardholder to contact the bank.
94Duplicate transactionThe Cardholders issuer has declined the transaction as this transaction appears to be a duplicate transmission.
