How does 3DSv1 differ from 3DSv2?

  • How does 3DSv1 differ from 3DSv2?

Although 3D Secure version 1 (3DSv1) is compliant for SCA purposes, 3D Secure version 2 (3DSv2) offers a more advanced solution that provides a better customer journey and enriched data flows. As a minimum, we encourage Merchants to enrol and utilise 3DSv1 with immediate effect.

3DSv2 is an additional authentication protocol implemented by the card networks to enable consumers to authenticate themselves with their card issuer when making card-not-present eCommerce purchases. Rather than static passwords, 3DSv2 uses dynamic authentication methods such as biometrics and token-based authentication.

This additional layer of security helps prevent unauthorised use of cards and protects Merchants from exposure to fraud.
